The historic center is presented as the urban evolution of a fortified castle surrounded by the ancient walls dating from the twelfth century, in which there are still four original gates.
Heart of the village is a large square with the old well in the past used to supply water to all inhabitants. In the square stands the thirteenth-century Town Hall Tower with the double row of blackbirds.
Next to Town Hall stands the Romanesque church of Santa Flora and Lucilla, the oldest within the castle walls. Built with a nave, holds within it great works of art.
The village itself offers areas of great historical and artistic heritage, from the walls completely rebuilt by Baldassarre Peruzzi in 1528.
Among the four entrances to the village, Port Gavina is the oldest and unique, both for the architecture for the wooden door in 1200.
Leaving the walls to the south we arrive at the Sun Gate, where the first houses were built of wood inhabited by families of soldiers responsible for defending the castle.
This opens the space of the Ball Game, a meeting place for players of tambourine and theater of the Palio of the Donkeys.
In the bottom of the yard is the Oratory of Our Lady of the Snows built in 1525 in honor of Mary, as a result of a severe plague.
You should visit the Old Town strolling aimlessly enjoy the quiet and smells that emanate from the old houses.
