DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
The altarpiece comes from the Church of the Carmine in Siena, for which it was commissioned from the artist between 1327 and 1328 and completed before October 26, 1329. A document from that date survives in which the Municipality of Siena granted, at the request of the Carmelites, the sum necessary to redeem the work, which the painter was holding onto pending payment.
The central panel bears a date that, although affected by paint loss, can be interpreted as 1918. The friars were indeed short of money, having been paid 150 gold florins.
